Proper Transitioning is Extremely Important

Abrubtly switching your dog's food from kibble to fresh made food can cause stomach upset, vomiting and/or diarrhea. We recommend gradually introducing Happy Dog Cuisine into your dogs existing kibble diet. Gradually increase the ratio of Happy Dog Cuisine while reducing your dogs current food over the course of a week. If you notice signs of stomach upset in your dog, slow the transition process down. Some dogs may require a longer transition period of up to 14 days.

Why a Fast Transition Causes Digestive Upset

The canine digestive system is highly adaptable, but abrupt dietary changes can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria (microbiota) and enzyme production, leading to:

  1. Microbiome Disruption – The gut microbiome consists of beneficial bacteria that help break down and absorb nutrients. A sudden change in diet can alter the bacterial population, leading to loose stools and gas.

  2. Enzyme Production Adjustments – The pancreas produces specific digestive enzymes tailored to the diet. Kibble-based diets are typically high in carbohydrates, while fresh diets contain more proteins and good fats. The digestive system needs time to adjust its enzyme production accordingly.

  3. Osmotic Imbalance – Kibble absorbs moisture in the gut differently than fresh food. The sudden introduction of fresh food, which has higher moisture content, can cause an osmotic shift in the intestines, leading to diarrhea.

Gradually adding new food in very small amounts to your dogs existing kibble diet over an extended period of time leads to a successful and happy transition.
